Rawish me.

Listing all my flaws as a writer would be a lengthy and depressing process. I would, however, like to open this community with an examination of some of my personal flaws as a writer. This is partially as a mean of disclosure and partially an attempt to reinforce the theme of honest and open examination.

Some of my flaws as a writer:

-I'm not as meticulous an editor as I should be. This leads to small problems like typos and missing words, but also more important issues such as inconsistent tone or even disjunction in terms of thesis or focus. One of the main purposes of editing is to smooth a piece out, make sure that the points flow naturally and smoothly into one another rather than leaving exposed seams or (worse) contradictions. I'm not as good at this as I'd like to be.

-I am stylistically bland. I find it very difficult to inject true stylisim into my work.

-I am overly verbose. Good writing resembles the music of the Ramones. It highlights what is necessary and strips away the rest.

-I am impatient. I often don't stick with an idea or piece long enough to see it through to completion, preferring to flit off to something else. This is a serious flaw that must be corrected if I want to get anything done.

-I am arrogant. This is not a problem for the writing, per se, but rather in my reception of criticism. I need to be more open to, and willing to objectively analyze, it.

-I'm a coward. I am afraid to put my writing out there, and I'm afraid to be overly honest and personal in my work. This may be the most important flaw, since it holds me back in a huge number of ways. It's one I definitely need to work on.
